Victoria BC gardens guide

Victoria is sometimes called "The City of Gardens" having a wonderful gardening climate. A flower count is held in February each year - the record count was  8,521,514,876 blooms in 2002! So plan to visit some during your visit. You may wish to book our Gardens Package.

Butchart Gardens
800 Benvenuto Avenue, Brentwood Bay, BC, (1-866 652-4422). Just a short drive from our bed and breakfast!
Over 50 acres of glorious floral displays. Justifiably world famous and deserving at least two hours to visit. Stay for the evening display of lights 15th June to 15th September and 1st December to 6th January. The Saturday fireworks show is highly recommended, July and August. Treat yourself to afternoon tea - one of the best in Victoria, buy a picnic hamper or have dinner in The Dining Room in the Butchart family's original home. Click for more about the Butchart Gardens. Glendale Gardens (formerly the "Horticultural Centre of the Pacific")
505 Quayle Road, Victoria. (1-250 479-6162) A demonstration and education garden with over 100 acres of displays of heathers, rhododendrons, perennials and much more. We enjoy the enchanting Takata Japanese garden in a wooded hillside. See their Wedding page for wedding functions. See a photo gallery and more about Glendale Gardens. You can also view directions at our Glendale Gardens map.

Finnerty Gardens at the University of Victoria
3800 Finnerty Road, Victoria. (1-250 721-7014) Spectacular collection of rhododendrons seen best in May and June. Over 3,000 different trees and shrubs in a lovely woodland setting.

Hatley Gardens
2005 Sooke Road, Victoria. (1-866 241-0674). Italian Gardens, Japanese Garden and Rose Garden. Situated on over 500 acres of the former Dunsmuir estate with ocean views across to the snow-capped Olympic Mountains. Created at the turn of the 19th century by over 100 gardeners working full time for 10 years, these three formal gardens are open daily. Guided tours are available. See our Hatley Gardens map.

Government House
1401 Rockland Avenue, Victoria. The official residence of the Lieutenant Governor, the Queen's representative in British Columbia. Substantial gardens in a lovely setting which are established and maintained in large part by volunteers. Large cutting garden, perennial beds, rose garden.

Abkhazi Garden
1964 Fairfield Road, Victoria. (1-250 598-8096) The result of 40 years of dedication by a Russian prince and princess who rebuilt their lives after years of separation and internment during the Second World War. Saved from development in 2000 by donations and volunteer labour, the natural garden has Garry Oaks, exposed rock with ponds and alpines and a rhododendron woodland. Directions are on the Abkhazi Gardens map.

Playfair Park
Rock Street, off Quadra Street. A secret treasure of which many Victorians are unaware. May and June sparkle with hundreds of rhododendrons in a one-acre maze. Has a lovely perennial border garden maintained by city garden staff.

Beacon Hill Park
South of downtown off Douglas Street, offering much variety and space even with a Petting Zoo. Don't miss the photogenic stone bridge across from the pond.

Butterfly Gardens
Though mainly visited as a habitat for butterflies these are also interesting as tropical gardens - see information on our Victoria Attractions page.
